Troy Aikman is once again weighing in on Dak Prescott — and his comments come at a critical moment for the Dallas Cowboys.

Now, Troy Aikman’s name has entered that conversation once again.

AIKMAN HAS NEVER BEEN AFRAID TO DEFEND DAK

Aikman understands better than almost anyone what it means to play quarterback for Dallas.

The Hall of Famer spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys and led the franchise to three Super Bowl victories.

Earlier this year, Aikman discussed Prescott’s situation and pushed back on the idea that Dallas had simply failed to get enough from its quarterback. He also praised Prescott’s ability to handle the complicated dynamic of playing alongside multiple star receivers.

That history makes his perspective particularly relevant now.

Because after one disappointing game, the pressure on Prescott has returned almost immediately.

WEEK 1 WASN’T SIMPLY A DAK STORY

The numbers tell only part of the story.

Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but the Cowboys struggled to consistently sustain offense while their defense had major communication problems.

Dallas also lost Javonte Williams’ receiving touchdown after a taunting penalty pushed the extra point back, and Brandon Aubrey subsequently missed the longer attempt.

Meanwhile, the Giants controlled the clock and repeatedly converted important third downs.

That has led some Dallas analysts to argue that the problems extend well beyond Prescott.

Current Cowboys analysis has pointed toward issues involving the defense, offensive line and supporting skill-position players, while Jerry Jones has specifically criticized the team’s defensive communication.

THE MESSAGE COWBOYS FANS NEED TO HEAR

That’s why the Aikman angle matters.

Defending Dak doesn’t necessarily mean claiming he played a perfect game.

He didn’t.

The interception mattered.

But one game also doesn’t erase the larger body of work.

Prescott remains one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Cowboys history, and Aikman has repeatedly recognized the difficulty of evaluating a quarterback without considering everything surrounding him.

The Cowboys now have an immediate opportunity to respond.

WEEK 2 CHANGES EVERYTHING

Washington is scheduled to visit Dallas in Week 2, giving Prescott and the Cowboys a chance to put the Giants loss behind them.

The pressure will be enormous.

And every Prescott throw will be examined.

But perhaps Aikman’s most important message isn’t about defending Dak from criticism.

It’s about making sure the criticism is directed at the whole football team, rather than automatically placing every problem on the quarterback.

Dallas has plenty to fix.

Prescott has things to clean up.

The defense needs better communication.

The offensive line needs consistency.

And the entire team needs to respond.
