BIG NEWS: Cowboys Receive Unfavorable Update on Tyler Smith’s Injury — Dallas Faces a Major Blow

The Dallas Cowboys have been hit with a major injury setback, and this is not the kind of news Cowboys Nation wanted to hear.

Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith has officially been placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his thumb. The Cowboys are now expected to be without one of their most important offensive linemen for at least the first four games of the 2026 season, with his overall recovery timeline estimated at roughly four to six weeks.

For a Dallas team entering the season with enormous expectations, the timing could hardly be worse.

A TOUGH BLOW FOR DALLAS

Smith has become a key piece of the Cowboys’ offensive line since arriving in Dallas. His absence isn’t simply about losing one starter — it forces the Cowboys to reshuffle an offensive line that was expected to provide stability in front of Dak Prescott.

The injury had reportedly been bothering Smith for some time, with the team initially attempting to avoid surgery. That approach ultimately didn’t work, leaving Dallas with no choice but to address the problem surgically.

Now the Cowboys have to move forward without one of their best interior blockers.

T.J. BASS GETS THE CALL

Dallas Cowboys to Place Tyler Smith on Injured Reserve After Surgery

The immediate solution is expected to be T.J. Bass, who will step into Smith’s left-guard position.

Bass has experience and gives Dallas a legitimate option, but replacing a three-time Pro Bowl-level player is never simple.

The pressure will be enormous.

Every missed block, every negative rushing play and every hit absorbed by Dak Prescott will inevitably bring comparisons between Bass and the injured Smith.

And that could become especially important early in the season.

THE TIMING COULD HURT

Dallas doesn’t have the luxury of easing into the schedule.

Smith is expected to miss the opening stretch of the season, including the Cowboys’ Week 1 matchup against the Giants. He could also miss subsequent games against Washington, Baltimore and Houston depending on his recovery.

That means the Cowboys must find a way to maintain offensive consistency while one of their most reliable linemen watches from the sideline.

For Dak Prescott, protecting the pocket becomes even more important.

For the running game, creating movement up front becomes even more challenging.

And for Brian Schottenheimer, finding the right combination along the offensive line suddenly becomes one of the biggest priorities on the roster.

COWBOYS NATION HAS REASON TO WORRY

Nobody is saying Tyler Smith’s injury will derail the entire season.

But it is absolutely a setback.

Dallas entered 2026 hoping to build momentum immediately, and losing an All-Pro-caliber offensive lineman before the season gets fully underway is exactly the kind of obstacle that can test a team’s depth.

The good news is that Smith’s absence is not expected to be season-ending. If his recovery stays on schedule, Dallas should eventually get its starting guard back.

Until then, however, the Cowboys have to survive without him.

And that puts the spotlight directly on T.J. Bass and the rest of the offensive line.

THE BIG QUESTION

Can the Cowboys keep Dak Prescott protected and maintain their offensive identity until Tyler Smith returns?

Or will this injury expose a weakness that Dallas cannot afford to have?
