SAD NEWS: 13-YEAR-OLD FOOTBALL PLAYER DIES AFTER CARDIAC ARREST DURING PRACTICE

A heartbreaking loss has shaken a North Carolina football community.

Caden Sorrell, a 13-year-old student and football player at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina, has died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during football practice.

His death has left his family, teammates, classmates and coaches facing an unimaginable loss.

Caden had only recently begun practice when the medical emergency occurred. According to his family, he suffered cardiac arrest during the session and was taken to Cone Hospital for emergency treatment.

Doctors used intensive medical support in an effort to save him, but his condition ultimately proved too severe.

Caden died on August 30, 2026.

He was just 13 years old.

REMEMBERING CADEN

Those who knew Caden have remembered him for far more than football.

His older sister, Vanessa Clark, described him as kind, intelligent and someone who made the people around him feel loved.

Caden wore No. 42 for the Northwest Guilford Vikings and was a young athlete who enjoyed being part of his football team.

But to his family, he was first and foremost a beloved son, brother and member of their family.

He leaves behind a twin brother and three other siblings, making the loss even more painful for those closest to him.

A COMMUNITY IN MOURNING

Northwest Guilford Middle School announced Caden’s death with a message of grief for the entire school community.

A memorial was established on campus where students, friends and community members could leave flowers, notes and other expressions of remembrance.

The football community also gathered to honor Caden and support the family during an extraordinarily difficult time.

For his teammates, a football field that had normally been a place for practice and friendship suddenly became a place of remembrance.

That is a difficult reality for any community to face, especially when the person being remembered was only 13.

HIS FAMILY WANTS HIS MEMORY TO HELP OTHERS

Caden’s family has said doctors believe an underlying genetic condition may have contributed to the cardiac emergency, although the exact cause has not been publicly established.

His siblings are expected to undergo genetic testing as the family seeks answers.

Rather than allowing their grief to remain only a source of sadness, Caden’s family has also encouraged other families to take cardiac health seriously, particularly when children participate in sports.

Their message is simple: knowing more about a child’s health can potentially help families identify risks before they become emergencies.

A LIFE THAT MATTERED

Caden’s life was short, but the memories he created were clearly meaningful to the people around him.

His family remembers his personality.

His teammates remember a young player wearing No. 42.

His school remembers one of its students.

And his community now carries the responsibility of making sure he is not forgotten.

Football is supposed to be about competition, teamwork and memories.
