PRESEASON FRAUD ALERT! COWBOYS SURGE WHILE BEARS CRUMBLE!

Not a single snap has been played in Week 1, yet the NFL’s latest Power Rankings have already sent shockwaves across the league.

And if you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan, there’s plenty to like.

If you’re a Chicago Bears fan, however, the honeymoon may already be getting uncomfortable.

The latest NFL.com Power Rankings have Dallas climbing all the way to No. 8, a three-spot jump from the preseason rankings. Chicago, meanwhile, has fallen out of the Top 10 to No. 11.

That may not sound like a massive difference on paper.

But the message behind those movements is impossible to ignore.

The Cowboys are being rewarded for what they showed during camp and the preseason: a defense that suddenly looks dramatically different from the unit that held them back.

Chicago?

The Bears are being asked to prove that last season’s breakthrough was the beginning of something real rather than the peak of an exciting turnaround.

And that makes the Week 1 storyline even more fascinating.

DALLAS FINALLY FIXED THE PROBLEM?

 

For years, the conversation surrounding Dallas has been frustratingly predictable.

The offense has enough firepower.

Dak Prescott can make plays.

CeeDee Lamb remains one of the league’s premier offensive weapons.

But when the Cowboys have fallen short, the defense has frequently been the problem.

This offseason, Dallas attacked that weakness aggressively.

The Cowboys added defensive talent while handing the unit to new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, creating a completely different look heading into 2026.

NFL.com’s Nick Shook specifically pointed to the upgraded defensive lineup and Parker’s potential as the reason for moving Dallas up three spots.

And the optimism isn’t coming out of nowhere.

During a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, Dallas’ new-look defense reportedly controlled the session against a talented Rams offense led by Matthew Stafford and coached by Sean McVay.

That kind of performance doesn’t guarantee anything once the games count.

But it does explain why the Cowboys are suddenly generating legitimate contender buzz.

The ingredients are familiar.

Explosive offense.

Elite-level quarterback play.

A star receiver.

And now, potentially, a defense capable of giving them the support they’ve desperately needed.

THE BEARS HYPE TRAIN JUST HIT A SPEED BUMP

Chicago entered 2026 with something it hasn’t had in a long time:

real expectations.

Caleb Williams is entering his third NFL season.

Ben Johnson is no longer a new coach trying to establish his system.

The Bears are coming off an NFC North-winning season.

And suddenly, people weren’t talking about Chicago as a rebuilding project anymore.

They were talking about the Bears as a potential NFC contender.

That’s why dropping to No. 11 feels so significant.

The Bears aren’t suddenly a bad team.

Far from it.

But the concerns are becoming harder to ignore.

NFL.com highlighted questions surrounding Chicago’s young receiving corps and, more importantly, a secondary that has been hit by injuries during camp.

That is a dangerous combination for a team attempting to make the jump from exciting playoff team to legitimate Super Bowl threat.

The offense could still be explosive.

Williams could absolutely take another step.

Johnson remains one of the most intriguing offensive minds in the league.

But if the defense can’t hold up, Chicago could discover that expectations are much heavier than they were a year ago.

SO, ARE THE COWBOYS ALREADY A LOCK?

Absolutely not.

And this is where Cowboys Nation needs to pump the brakes.

Power Rankings aren’t standings.

They aren’t playoff tickets.

And they certainly aren’t trophies.

Dallas hasn’t played its Week 1 game yet.

In fact, the Cowboys are about to face the New York Giants on the road in prime time, giving them an immediate opportunity to prove whether the offseason hype is legitimate.

There are also real concerns.

Dallas recently lost Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith for at least the next month-plus, according to NFL.com’s Week 1 ranking analysis.

And a defensive unit can look dominant in camp before facing the speed, creativity and pressure of a real NFL game.

That’s why the Cowboys aren’t a lock.

But they’re certainly more interesting than they were several months ago.

THE NFC EAST JUST GOT MORE INTERESTING

Here’s the bigger question:

If Dallas’ defense is actually improved, how high can this team climb?

The Cowboys don’t need their defense to become the best unit in football.

They simply need it to stop being the reason their explosive offense goes to waste.

That’s a much more realistic target.

If Parker’s defense can consistently create pressure, force turnovers and get off the field, Dallas suddenly has the type of roster that can compete with anybody in the NFC.

And that’s why the jump to No. 8 matters.

It’s not proof that Dallas is elite.

It’s proof that the league is starting to believe the Cowboys have addressed the biggest flaw in their roster.

Meanwhile, Chicago has the opposite problem.

The Bears have plenty of reasons for optimism, but now they have to prove their hype wasn’t built too heavily on projections.

One team is climbing before playing a meaningful snap.

The other is slipping before playing one.

That’s the beautiful—and ridiculous—thing about September Power Rankings.

Nobody knows anything yet.

But the arguments have already started.

Dallas fans see a rebuilt defense and a Super Bowl window.

Bears fans see Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson and an offense capable of making noise.

And everyone else is waiting for Week 1 to settle the debate.

Because rankings can move.

Hype can disappear.

And preseason narratives can become completely irrelevant in a matter of hours.

So here’s the question Cowboys Nation should be debating:

Is Dallas genuinely the team to beat in the NFC East—or are we about to find out that the preseason hype train is just getting started?

Week 1 is coming.

And the Cowboys finally have a chance to prove that this defense isn’t just a camp story.

It’s the real deal.
