Dak Prescott Issues a Brief Challenge to Jaxson Dart Ahead of Week 1 — Giants QB Fires Back

The stage is set for another chapter in one of the NFL’s most familiar rivalries, and this time, the spotlight is squarely on the quarterbacks.

Jaxson Dart can't lose the swagger that made him Giants' choice as franchise savior | Politi - nj.com

The Dallas Cowboys will travel to MetLife Stadium on September 13 to face the New York Giants in the opening week of the 2026 NFL season. With Dak Prescott leading Dallas and Jaxson Dart entering his second season as New York’s quarterback, the matchup has quickly developed into one of the most intriguing quarterback storylines of Week 1.

And according to the storyline surrounding the matchup, Prescott delivered a short challenge to Dart that immediately caught attention.

Dart, however, apparently had no interest in backing down.

Prescott Sends a Message

Cowboys' Dak Prescott Says He's Been 'Average' amid 3-3 Start: 'Isn't Good Enough'

Prescott has been around the NFC East rivalry long enough to understand exactly what a Week 1 meeting with the Giants represents.

For Dallas, this isn’t simply another game on the schedule. It’s the beginning of a new season, a chance to establish momentum immediately and an opportunity to remind the rest of the division that the Cowboys remain a dangerous team.

Prescott’s challenge to Dart was reportedly simple in nature: prove it when the lights come on.

That message carries extra weight because of the contrast between the two quarterbacks.

Prescott is a veteran who has spent years navigating enormous expectations in Dallas. Dart, meanwhile, is still establishing himself as the long-term answer for New York.

But Dart enters the matchup with something Prescott cannot take away from him: confidence.

The Giants quarterback has already shown that he isn’t intimidated by the stage.

Dart Fires Back

Rather than treating Prescott’s words as a warning, Dart reportedly responded with the kind of confidence that has quickly become part of his identity.

The message was essentially straightforward:

If Prescott wants to see what Dart can do, he only has to watch on Sunday night.

That response is exactly what makes this matchup so compelling.

Dart isn’t entering Week 1 as an unknown quarterback anymore. During the 2025 season finale against Dallas, he completed 22 of 32 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns while adding 32 rushing yards. The Giants won that game 34-17.

Of course, neither team can simply assume that the previous result will carry over.

Dallas has changed.

New York has changed.

And perhaps most importantly, the Giants now have John Harbaugh running the team.

A Completely Different Giants Team

The Giants finished the previous season 4-13, but the organization believes its young core can take a major step forward.

Dart is at the center of that optimism.

The Giants have publicly emphasized the quarterback’s development throughout training camp, while Dart himself has expressed confidence in the preparation he has received against New York’s defense. He recently described those daily practices as some of the best preparation he could possibly get.

There are still legitimate questions.

Dart has not played in a live preseason game since the Giants’ opener against Minnesota, meaning he will enter the Cowboys game after a lengthy stretch without preseason competition. Harbaugh deliberately chose not to expose his quarterback to unnecessary injury risk during the preseason.

That makes Sunday night even more important.

If Dart starts quickly, the Giants could immediately turn the pressure back toward Dallas.

Prescott Has Plenty to Prove, Too

While much of the attention will naturally focus on Dart, Prescott isn’t entering this game without pressure.

The Cowboys have high expectations entering 2026, and the offense is expected to be one of the team’s biggest strengths.

NFL.com identified Prescott versus Dart as one of the central storylines of the Week 1 matchup, alongside Dallas’ explosive offense facing a revamped Giants defense.

That means Prescott will have to deal with a Giants defense determined to make Dart’s job easier.

If Dallas can move the ball early and force New York into a pass-heavy comeback situation, Prescott’s experience could become a major advantage.

If the Giants can generate pressure, create turnovers and keep the game close into the fourth quarter, however, the pressure could quickly shift onto the Cowboys.

One Game, Two Quarterbacks, One Big Statement

That’s ultimately what makes the Prescott-Dart storyline so fascinating.

This isn’t simply about one quarterback challenging another.

It’s about experience versus potential.

Prescott represents the established veteran trying to lead Dallas into another competitive season.

Dart represents the young quarterback trying to prove that New York has finally found a player capable of changing the direction of the franchise.

And now they’ll get to settle the argument on the biggest possible stage.

The Cowboys and Giants are scheduled to meet Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium, with NBC carrying the nationally televised matchup.

For Prescott, it’s an opportunity to start the season with a statement win.

For Dart, it’s an opportunity to show that last year’s flashes were only the beginning.

And if the quarterback exchange ahead of kickoff is any indication, neither side intends to enter the rivalry quietly.

The talking is almost over.

Now comes the part that matters.

Let the game decide who gets the last word.
