Tyler Smith’s Latest Update Following Thumb Surgery

The Dallas Cowboys are preparing to open the 2026 NFL season without one of their most important offensive linemen, as Tyler Smith continues his recovery from surgery on his left thumb.

Tyler Smith signs massive contract extension with Cowboys

Smith, the Cowboys’ Pro Bowl left guard, was scheduled to undergo surgery after dealing with a lingering thumb injury that had affected him throughout training camp. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that the injury had reached a point where Smith could no longer perform at the level he expected from himself.

The latest information indicates that Smith is expected to miss approximately four to six weeks. Because Dallas placed him on injured reserve with a designation to return, he will miss at least the opening four games of the regular season before becoming eligible to return.

Surgery Became the Best Option

The Cowboys had hoped Smith could manage the injury without surgery. He continued practicing through the preseason while the team explored different ways to protect the thumb.

Cowboys' Tyler Smith Changes Agents

Eventually, however, it became clear that playing through the injury was not the best long-term option.

Schottenheimer explained that Smith felt he could not consistently perform at a high level. For an offensive lineman, the issue was particularly significant because grip strength is essential when engaging defenders and maintaining leverage.

Rather than allowing the problem to linger into the regular season, Dallas decided that surgery was the better course of action.

The decision is frustrating from a timing perspective, but the Cowboys appear to be prioritizing Smith’s health for the remainder of the season rather than risking a longer-term problem.

Cowboys Expect Smith Back Later This Fall

The initial recovery timeline of four to six weeks gives Dallas reason to remain optimistic.

Smith could potentially become eligible to return in Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, because that game falls on a short week, his return may not happen immediately.

An Oct. 18 matchup against the Green Bay Packers has been identified as a potentially more realistic target if Smith needs additional recovery time.

The Cowboys have not indicated that Smith’s injury is expected to threaten his availability for the remainder of the season. Instead, the expectation is that the three-time Pro Bowler will return once he is healthy enough to play at his normal level.

That is an important distinction for Dallas. The team is losing Smith at a difficult moment, but this appears to be a temporary absence rather than a season-ending setback.

T.J. Bass Steps Into the Starting Role

With Smith unavailable, the Cowboys will turn to T.J. Bass at left guard.

Bass has already accumulated valuable experience with Dallas, making 10 career starts over his first three seasons and starting five games during the 2025 campaign. The coaching staff has expressed significant confidence in his ability to handle the responsibility.

Schottenheimer emphasized that Bass has already played alongside several of Dallas’ other offensive linemen, which should help minimize communication issues when the regular season begins.

The Cowboys also retained Bass during the offseason, a decision that now becomes particularly important given Smith’s injury.

A Significant Loss for Dallas

Smith’s absence is still a major blow.

Since moving permanently to left guard, Smith has developed into one of the league’s premier interior offensive linemen. He has earned Pro Bowl recognition in each of his three seasons at the position, becoming a key part of the Cowboys’ offensive identity.

His combination of strength, athleticism and consistency has made him especially valuable to Dallas’ running game and pass protection.

The Cowboys therefore face a difficult challenge during the opening stretch of the season. The offensive line will need to adjust quickly, with Bass taking over one of its most important positions.

Still, Dallas appears to believe it has enough depth to survive Smith’s absence.

The Bigger Picture

For Cowboys fans, the most encouraging part of the latest update is the recovery timeline.

Smith is expected to miss the beginning of the season, but there is currently no indication that the injury will keep him out for an extended portion of the year. The organization is instead taking a cautious approach with one of its most important players.

The immediate objective is simple: allow Smith to recover properly and return when he can play without the limitations caused by his thumb.

Until then, Bass will have the opportunity to prove that he can keep the position stable.

For a Cowboys team entering the 2026 season with high expectations, Smith’s eventual return could provide a significant boost. If his recovery stays on schedule, Dallas could have its All-Pro-caliber guard back in the lineup later this fall, potentially giving the offensive line a major lift at an important point in the season.
